The replacement deep frams finally arrived so Don and I went to Lake Forest Park to install them. When we openend the two hives, we saw that they had been at work! Tragically, they had filled the spaces without the deep frames with lots of comb and brood. There was even some honey in there. We unfortunately had to destroy it all to make room for the new frames, which will set back the hives' development by at least a week.

In both new hives we saw the queen, which was a relief. It means they worked out and should have a productive summer. Our plan is to give them another week or so before we open them again. The next time we work them, we'll rotate the deep hive bodies from top to bottoms so they have room to grow up. The middle hive (the older one, formerly at the Fosters) has no sugar water in it, and two supers. I'm hoping that since that's an established hive it will get to work immediately on producing honey.
