Mmmm, strawberry shortcake
29 June 2008

Ok, so I couldn't resist. Denise and I went to the Strawberry Festival today and had some shortcake. Actually turned out exactly like I planned/hoped. Just a tiny bit dry, but with the strawberry juice the scone got nice and tender. And originally I thought the scone was too big, but it worked nicely with the amount of strawberries and whipped cream they put in the bowl.

We were there just in time for the strawberry shortcake eating contest, which I convinced Denise to compete in. To show her corporate spirit, of course. Her claim to fame in this contest was that she was sitting next to the winner. Go Jonesie!

Too many scones
28 June 2008

Starry Nights got a huge opportunity to make all the scones for the Bellevue Strawberry Festival. 5500 scones, to be precise. It took a huge effort to get this all done, but we did, and they were perfect.

We started mixing on Saturday and finished baking today. Our numbers:

  • Flour: 620# (12.5 50# bags)
  • Sugar: 137.5# (5.5 25# bags)
  • Butter: 206#
  • Eggs: 1100 (92 dozen)
  • Cream: 34.5 gallons
  • Vanilla extract: 1.5 gallons
  • 100 sheet pans of 56 scones each
  • 69 boxes to deliver them all
  • 2 separate delivery days (Friday and Saturday)
  • 17 hours of mixing
  • 18 hours of baking
  • 3 cooks for a total of 88 hours

As good as the results were, I don't think I could eat a scone if you paid me!
